Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Clients learn to stop struggling to manage unwanted feelings and emotions, unhelpful thoughts, distressing memories and engaging in action that does not honor their values and instead learn how to increase meaningful action. The goal of ACT is to create a meaningful life, while accepting the pain that goes with it.
